Critically discuss this statement, indicating to what extent you agree with it - Essay ExampleFirstly, there should be a distinction on what is accepted as perception. In this case, the law should clearly define what would qualify as a perception which may warrant compensation. The certify issue concerns what would be deemed as a liability arising from the damage. In this case, there should be limits which are spelled out in regards to liability. The third aspect of the law entails what is cognize as the threshold which concerns the recovery made as a result of a claim or legal suit. The following discourse seeks to prove that the sentiments by Lord Oliver are true. The law on psychiatric damage is problemical. It seeks to protect the victim while at the same time puts caution on the descriptor of claim that can be sought by the victim. The objective of the law is to accord justice to all people irrespective of creed or private influence1. The law carefully outlines what damage i n case of psychiatric pain is. The damage defined by the law states that is should not concord been inflicted by a physical pain. This implies that for one to be eligible for consideration of a claim for any form of psychiatric damage, it should not be a physical scathe. This is the paradox that surrounds the law on negligence in relation to causes of psychiatric damage. Such a situation evokes different reactions from law and policy makers. In fact, it makes one sympathise the sentiments, I cannot, for my part, regard the present state of the law as either entirely satisfactory or as logically defensible (Alcock and Others v header Constable of the South Yorkshire Police 1992 PIQR 1, 26.When it comes to negligence that leads to medical conditions, the law is a bit clear. However, when it comes to psychiatric damage, the law tends to be a bit ambiguous. For instance, the law defines forms of injury as those that can be proven medically. However, in technical terms, a mental dama ge can be so abstract to even have a medical proof. The human psychology is a

For example in the poem I said winter wind both words have a w in the beginning. I also used sunshine smile which has a s in the beginning of each word. This is how my poem uses assonance/alliteration. Read ona The Monster Mama always said she loved me. APT is a high-quality utility pole and lumber manufacturer, supplier and producer we use both Douglas fir and Cedar Wood, identified as one of the leading renewable wood resources. APT has facilities strategically located near the Klamath and California microscope slide ranges where we own an abundance of Douglas fir and Cedar wood plantations, and will thus be able to supply the pole and lumber material specified in the solicitation.4.3. Wood Tr eatment RecommendationsTimber structures in a marine environment are subject to attack by a variety of destructive organisms. Thus, they should be properly treated with appropriate preservatives to prevent or retard this type of deterioration. The timber APT is offering as part of this proposal will be pressure treated with an appropriate preservative. The choice of preservative depends on how the timber product is to be used (pile, cap, stringer, decking, etc.) and what kind of climate exists where the installation is to be make (cold, temperate, semitropical, tropical). Thus, the requirements are greatest in warm water harbors where Limnoria tripunctata and pholads are present. Pacific Coast Douglas fir has less sapwood than Southern pine so that retention mensuration of preservative is generally made in the outer 2 inches for fir as compared to the outer 3 inches for pine. APT is thus offering treated Douglas fir poles and lumber, which are best suited for the intended applicati on and would be a significant upgrade in quality over standard competitor offerings.APT follows the AWPA standards and federal specifications for treatment which indicate the required retention level of the various wood preservatives. Wood piling should be treated according to their particular purposes, and this being a cold water marine application, APT will use pressure treatment using a preservative specified by AWPA standards and Federal specifications. Creosote, creosote-coal tar solutions, or creosote-petroleum solutions are effective preservatives, yet present a possible contamination problem from being penetrateed onto vessels. Salt treatments are effective, but may embrittle or promote accelerated wear of the deck surface.Solutions of pentachlorophenol in oil are effective, butthey also may cause a defilement problem. Treatment with Chromated Copper Arsenate should provide protection without the contamination problems, especially when a clean surface is specified in the procurement, as it is in this case. APT will thus offer Chromated Copper Arsenate pressure treatment on the supplied Douglas fir poles and lumber, another significant upgrade in quality over standard competitor offerings.4.4. Delivery and DistributionAPT uses a Just in Time (JIT) inventory and delivery system. Mendelian Genetics of Drosophila | Lab Report

Mendelian Genetics of Drosophila Lab ReportJoshua ParkIntroductionDrosophila melanogaster, feeln generall(a)y as a fruit fly, is a cost-effective methodl organism with certain qualities that make it an bringing close togetherl interrogation tool in various fields of science. Drosophila melanogaster atomic number 18 preferred over vertebrate voguels as a research tool in genetic studies due to its basic food requirements, its ability to produce macro flecks of progeny in a short period of time, and quick life cycle. Depending on diet and stress its life span ranges up to an mean(a) maximum of 120 days. They are also easy and inexpensive to burnish in a laboratory environment, not to mention they interest up precise slight space. In addition, they project diverse phenotypicalal traits that are easily observable. Its anatomical features like the compound centerfield allow easy access for phenotypic characterization. They also have abundant genetic variation in a relativ ely small genome. Approximately 13,600 protein-coding genes are located in only tetrad chromosomes. Many heredity variations can be studied in these go.An example of this is the gene that codes for eye illusion in Drosophila, which can solving in red, reddish brown, white, or brown phenotypes. This unique ability to generate many unlike phenotypes provides D. melanogaster its practicality as an effective research tool for the study of the relationship between genotype and phenotype. In this experiment, we wanted to understand which phenotypic results would result from a mating flub between D. melanogaster parents with certain wild type and mutant phenotypes for eye color and cowcatcher size. The wild type phenotype for eye color is red, while the mutant phenotypes are sepia and white. The wild type phenotype for wing size is long, while the mutant phenotype is apterous, or no wing. We also wanted to know the reason for such phenotypic ratios, which we hypothesized to be the Men delian Law of Segregation in regards to the study of one trait. To do this, we mated D. melanogaster flies with similar and different phenotypes in order to see how well our results agreed with the Mendelian Law of Segregation. We created two fall guyes a monohybrid get finished where both(prenominal) male and young-bearing(prenominal) flies had the wild type phenotype (Bb and Bb), and a monohybrid cross where the male flies had the mutant phenotype (XwY) and the female flies had the wild type phenotype (X+X+). For our first monohybrid cross, we wanted to know what the pass judgment phenotypic ratio would be when crossing wildtype red-eyed flies, check to Mendels first law. We hypothesized that the expected phenotypic ratio for a cross with red-eyed flies would be 31 because according to the Mendelian Law of Segregation, the two alleles are separated from each(prenominal) some other during gamete formation. For our other monohybrid cross, we wanted to know what the expected phenotypic ratio would be when crossing wildtype red-eyed flies with mutant white-eyed flies, once again according to Mendels first law. We hypothesized that the expected phenotypic ratio would be 11 due to the Mendelian Law of Segregation. Using the chi-square test, we will be prepared to reject or fail to reject our hypothesis according to our mating cross results.Title Mendelian Genetics of DrosophilaMaterial and MethodsStudents in groups of two were given a number corresponding to a specialized fly occupation vial. Two culture vials pre-filled with food and cotton plugs were collected at the front of the classroom. The group number and initials were written on the vials. Next, the assigned storehouse vials were obtained and were lightly tapped on the lab bench to remove the flies from the cotton plug. An anesthesia wand was dipped into the FlyNap and carefully inserted through the cotton plugs into each stock vial. The stock vials were immediately placed horizontally on the lab bench after, preventing the flies from drowning in the food media. After waiting a few proceeding for the flies to fall asleep, the wands were removed from the vials and the flies from each vial were dumped onto separate index cards. The flies were ob dish tabood under a dissecting scope and found to be either male or female based on the body morphology. A lamp light was used for an easier inspection. Using a brush, 5 male and female flies from each cross clan were transferred to the culture vials. Once again, the vials were made sure to be placed horizontally on the lab bench. Each culture vial was sealed with a cotton plug, and the leftover flies were returned to the stock vials. The vials were returned to the TA for storage. Once larva could be seen in the fly culture vials, the parent flies were put to sleep and removed from the vials to avoid backcrossing. Once it was evident that many F1 offspring had matured into adults, the flies were put to sleep and dumped onto noteca rds. The flies from the assigned cross set were observed under a dissecting microscope, and the eye color and wing presence was recorded for each fly. For cross set E, both the sex and phenotype for each fly was recorded. After every F1 generation fly was counted for each cross set, they were dumped into the morgue. Results scratch go by CTable 1 F1 phenotypes for cross set CPhenotypeTotal numberEye color annexe sizeRedLong39SepiaLong9The F1 information that was collected for cross set C is indicated in Table 1. The p-value for cross set C was between 0.1 and 0.9. The p-value for cross set E was also between 0.1 and 0.9. As a result, we fail to reject the null hypothesis of the chi-square test for both crosses.DiscussionAccording to the results of this experiment, our research hypothesis was supported in each mating cross. We hypothesized that the expected phenotypic ratio for a cross with red-eyed wildtype flies would be 31, because according to the Mendelian Law of Segregation, the two alleles are separated from each other during gamete formation. Cross set C produced about three times as many red-eyed wildtype flies compared to sepia-eyed flies, confirming our hypothesis. For our other monohybrid cross, we wanted to know what the expected phenotypic ratio would be when crossing wildtype red-eyed flies with mutant white-eyed flies. We hypothesized that the expected phenotypic ratio would be 11 due to the Mendelian Law of Segregation. Cross set E produced equal amounts of red-eyed flies and white-eyed flies, confirming our hypothesis. The ratios obtained for cross sets C and E accurately reflected the expected results for a monohybrid cross and test cross respectively, as claimed by Mendels law of segregation. The results of the chi-square analysis show that the observed counts were very close to the expected counts. The p-values for both cross sets C and E were between 0.1 and 0.9. Since these p-values were larger than 0.05, it was conclude that we should fail to reject the null hypothesis. Failing to reject the null hypothesis means that the observed data was not statistically different from the expected data. The mode of inheritance for cross set C was determined to be complete dominance. In compl ete dominance, the dominant allele completely screens the effect of the recessive allele when both are present. Since both parents were found to be heterozygous for eye color (Bb), the dominant red allele masked the effect of the recessive sepia allele. The F1 data for cross set C demonstrates that wild type red eyes are dominant over sepia eyes, since the ratio of red-eyed flies (BB or Bb) to sepia-eyed flies (bb) was calculated to be 31, as expected for a monohybrid cross according to Mendels law of segregation. The mode of inheritance for cross set E was determined to be X-linked. Genetic conditions with an X-linked recessive inheritance pattern usually affect only the males in a family. This is because they are caused by altered or mutant genes found on the X-chromosome. Females are born with two X-chromosomes, so the effects of a working gene on one can mask the effects of a mutant gene on the other, which is similar to complete dominance. They will normally be unaffected carri ers of the condition. Males have only one X-chromosome, so if they inherit one with a mutant gene (XwY), they will be affected. The F1 data for cross set E demonstrates that the traits for red eyes and white eyes are located on the sex chromosome, since the ratio of red-eyed flies to white-eyed flies was determined to be 11. This indicated that the red-eyed female flies were heterozygous for eye color (X+Xw), since the contribution of a mutant allele from both parent flies would result in offspring with red eyes and white eyes in equal proportions. These results are comparable to the data from Thomas Hunt Morgans experiment with D. melanogaster. In his experiment, he discovered a mutant gene affecting eye color. This mutant gene was ex runed as a white color in the eyes. Morgan proceeded to discover that the gene for eye color was inherited in different ways depending on the sex of the fly. This difference came from the fact that female flies have two X chromosomes, while male flies only have one X chromosome and a Y chromosome. Morgan found that this gene had a similar inheritance pattern to the X chromosome. Thus, Morgan concluded that this gene was X-linked.A bound of this experiment is the fact that we only counted progeny during one session. Multiple trials of counting offspring may have produced closer values to the expected ratios of Mendels law of segregation. some other limitation would be the difficulty of identifying male flies from female flies in a quick and efficient manner. This research has demonstrated the practicality and versatility of D. melanogaster as a tool for research in the lab. Although these fruit flies may seem like very simple and insignificant organisms, they allow us to do research that may otherwise not have been possible. I plan to conduct further studies with D. melanogaster in the field of pharmacology. Since humans share key physiological processes with this organism, D. melanogaster would serve as an effective model for dr ug discovery. I aim to generate a new drug compound that would greatly aid in the give-and-take of type 2 diabetes. I hope that the research conducted with these flies will allow for greater discoveries in various fields of science that will conduce to the advancement of mankind.ReferencesJennings, B. H. (2011). When a person takes and idea that is not their own and represents it for impute. This is a morose representation of oneself by using work or an idea that is not original or stolen from another(prenominal) person. Furthermore different constituencies have different centre for the history of plagiarization. We might helpfully regard it as a triple entity or triangle. At one point of the triangle is cheating involving written works, the here and now inadvertent a failure to master conventions and the third are professionals who another work without permission for their own benefit.1 This is just taking advantage of other populations creative thinking without acknowledging them. Plagiarism represents truth without representing the source of the truth so ultimately it becomes its truth from the wrong person. When piracy is done without intention, knowledge or as a sneak then its called miss-use of sources. The great controversy on plagiarism is drawing the thin line between the deliberate and mistake and who takes responsibility between the teacher and the student.Plagiarism has been there as long as man existed and there was art and creativity but the realization of the vice and its consequences could have come with the printing press and academician advancement. In the early years of human existence philosophy, music and poetry were the ideologies and their practice as a sign of civilization and social advancement. The mode of education was informal and there was not based on research and opus and though plagiarism was practiced there is no data on who and when it started. In the definition and practice plagiarism was practiced as long as man lived. As plurality put their ideas and creativity in writing, distribution, trade and credit then plagiarism became a parallel business. The bring oning and printing companies and the authors had to protect themselves from theft and so the copy right protection laws. The twentieth cytosine has come with innovation, scientific discoveries and research and plagiarism has risen as a competing factor. There is need to protect individual work and publishers from those who plagiarize to avoid the gains achieved so far and chaos and confusion. The world has turned to capitalism and competition for resources and fame. Plagiarism has become more alive in this century and its a moral and profound matter that is challenging every society. The academic world has been transformed to research and analysis and students excel only after writing quizs, papers, thesis and publication do plagiarism a great threat. The new form of plagiarism is not for economic and popularity gain but for academic success and it a vice in all training institutions. There has been so many ideas presented in all academic fields and with technological advancement plagiarism is easy and appealing at once than before. The re is no limit to the destruction that plagiarism has done economically, politically, socially, emotionally and often leads to enemity, wars and legal disputes. Today in music and art industry plagiarism is a quick fix to fame and riches. Time as a resource today is more precious than ever and people are willing to take shortcuts and achieve goals within a short time. There is a lot convoluted in research, organization and tests in order to present work that is credit worthy in all fields of life so there is a trend to take shortcuts. Today there is unwritten policy of publish or perish in universities and so lecturers are likely to redo an old idea thus self -plagiarism. The internet has come of age and discipline is available all over the web for all disciplines and this is enticing to those who want to plagiarize. There is a demand for innovation, art, music, news and economic benefits are too mature attracting the real and fake at the same time.Types of PlagiarismPlagiarism c an either be intentional or accidental but the form and modes it takes take off a lot based on the situation. There is concern about academic plagiarism but there is a wide range from the unusual to the known , the written and the spoken and just like theft its trends and forms has no limits. The common one in research are taking some presented idea from a pool of knowledge and presenting it for credit. When one recycles and old concept or idea its self- plagiarism and the copy paste computer technology is a devil that propagates plagiarism. There is a pool of knowledge in all fields and research is ongoing in all parts of the world so plagiarism can arise unknowingly when there is agreement on the same concept and ideology. 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.15 further the evil spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you? 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, know all of them and overpowered the m, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.2 This is uncanny plagiarism as people assume the position of Paul and Jesus.Percentage of College Students Admitting to Selected Cheating Behaviors, 1963 and 19933Tests/Examinations 1963 1993Copied from another student 26% 52%Helped another student cheat 23% 37%Used crib notes 16 % 27%Written Work Copied veridical without footnoting 49% 54%Plagiarized 30% 26%Falsified a bibliography 38% 29%Turned in work done by another 29% 14%Collaborated on assignments requiring individual work 11% 49%The use of plagiarism has been on the rise just and taking new modes. This research data information show that the percentages have almost doubled in the thirty years. This trend means that in the next century plagiarism will be at level institutions and schools will find overwhelming. There is a great danger for academic and research advancement from plagiarism and there is a awake -up call. The reason for this paperThis paper is to demonst rate that I have a clear knowledge of plagiarism and Calvin Theological Seminary rule on plagiarism. I post this in my paper as a case study and after using the name of the person publishing this information I assumed this is not taking credit or plagiarism. I pledge i will not plagiarize again and action will be taken against me in future as per Calvin Theological Seminary statutes on plagiarism.Max Brewer in his 1907 book Der Deutsche Christus (The German Christ)During the First and Second World Wars, German Protestant leaders used the writings of Luther to support the cause of German nationalism On the 450th anniversary of Luthers birth, which fell only a few months after the Nazi company began its seizure of power in 1933, celebrations were conducted on a large scale by both the Protestant Churches and the Nazi Party. .At a celebration in Knigsberg, Erich Koch, at that time the Gauleiter of East Prussia, made a speech in which he, among other things, compared Adolf Hitler with M artin Luther and claimed that the Nazis fought with Luthers spirit. Such a speech might be dismissed as mere propaganda, but, as Steigmann-Gall points out Contemporaries regarded Koch as a bona fide Christian who had attained his position as the elected president of a provincial Church synod through a current commitment to Protestantism and its institutions. Even so, Steigmann-Gall states that the Nazis were not a Christian movement. The prominent Protestant theologian Karl Barth, in1939 stated that the writings of Martin Luther were used by the Nazis to spiritualise both the State and state absolutism The German people suffer under his error of the relationship between the law and the bible, between secular and spiritual power, in which Luther divided the temporal State from the inward state, focusing instead on spiritual matters, thus limiting the ability of the individual or the church service to question the actions of the State, which was seen as a God-ordained instrument.Eff ects of plagiarismPlagiarism affects the individual and the society and the effects can be long lasting and devastating. The person involved will lose trustworthy, moral, academic and social standing. This becomes worse when the person is taken to court or loose license of practice and financial loses. Those in the schools are expelled and many years of study and research go to waste. Plagiarism affects just like theft can be too cruel with years of despicable and regret. In the world today there are people that have lost positions of power and authority and careers destroyed. In the society plagiarism can result to financial loses and as companies and jobs are affected, court cases and warring parties, and threatening social standing.Reasons for plagiarismIgnorance and carelessness is the major sources of plagiarism. Ignorance and carelessness are also the major sources of the alibi from students who are caught plagiarizing. Even in cases where there are established writers, poli ticians, and academics have been caught plagiarizing the most common reason is confusion in my notes.4 There is always a reason behind every action good or bad and so people have different reasons to justify plagiarism. The world living in the era of quick fix and people have no time to invest in hard work as time becomes the most worthful resource. A majority of the plagiarism is intentional and by people that are well vast in their fields of knowledge but have little time to carry out a research. The financial and positional gain is attractive and is its good luck adventure that usually goes bad and becomes destructive. There is all information in the Web about anything and this makes plagiarism the easy and quick path to take. The economic trends today have forced people to do especial(a) work , juggle between multiple careers , become student workers and so there is little time to invest in school and learning thusly plagiarism is a solution. Self-plagiarism is one that can be done unaware after years of publishing and at times its miss-understanding and mistakes of not doing a citation. When people do research and writing they do it without fore knowledge of other people involved in the same work so plagiarism out of ignorance may not justify judgement and condemnation. There is a blame and counter by teachers and students but the bottom line is plagiarism is plagiarism. Today learning is intensive and cumbersome and most students had find it hard to match the pace and hence plagiarism.ConclusionAlthough we are teaching academic writing we cannot discount the cultural mise en scene. It invigorates the writing because is connected to the writers identity informing the writers voice -and yes it can be incorporated in to academic writing. Free writing should allow cultural context to serve as the true and comfortable setting in which second language students could get started in the process of writing a personal essay or research paper. 5 When people do r esearch and writing they do it in their character and nature and the work cannot be separate from themselves. All people live and work in communities that influence their thinking and actions and so when writing in their true self their work will be more original. When writing from second language and culture, under strict guidelines and limits and the objective of teaching and learning is defeated by just fulfilling the purpose. There is a reason to demystify plagiarism by teaching students those engaging in research and writing about it, and the basic academic law of education is character. There is need for continuous and genuine conversation by all institutions on the standards, punishment, and modes of plagiarism as new method and techniques evolve with technological advancement. Schools and universities need to engage parents and guardians since plagiarism is vice that is academic and moral. The question of self-plagiarism and miss-use of resources, or a typology and its punis hment will be there today and as long as there is writing and research. The new trends in plagiarism and its rise is a challenge to all institutions of learning and there is need to teach plagiarism and good academic morals as a mission.BibliographyBlum, Susan D. Changes In The Roles And Responsibilities Of Nurses

Changes In The Roles And Responsibilities Of NursesNursing staff pay seen their roles and responsibilities change considerably within the modernisation of the NHS, but is this a grievous amour? There atomic number 18 some big changes in the nursing field in the stand firm 50 old age such as, uniform, salaries, job need, the roles of books, the different roles for ready force and women nurses, the engine room use of priceys and servicesd, Litigation and Documentation, Holistic C ar and patient load. Nurses be becoming more popular and demanding in exclusively in all sorts of different give-up the ghostals environments such as, working in nursing homes, hospitals, home help, travel nurse, school nurse and more. Years ago, nurses were seen just as little more than helpers or assistants for doctors. Today in 2010, nurses atomic number 18 wellness mete out professionals in their own right. They are bright, strong-armerable, and often deplete a clearer picture of t he everywhereall situation than the doctors they work alongside with. Nursing has non only changed on the face of it but the background work of a nurse has changed to, for example the education given to nurses, the scope of policies and practice, the structures of nurses and the principles of the care of the patient. People are lead to believe that the modernisation of the NHS will be beneficial to the care of the patient, but is this really the case?Due to the increasingly shortage of nurses, they have acquire to be more independent which is an outstanding way to increase skills and keep up to date with the new trends in health care. As well as nursing changing, health care in general has changed overly. Within the modernisation of the NHS and nursing the care of the patients is still the everlasting goal. This factor that thither is more work for the nurses, which hence has a knock on affect leading to less satisfaction of patient care. Although the NHS and government are d oing their best to modernize nursing with the patients interests are heart, it seems like thither is less time for care due to time, but more time for paperwork. The Department of Health has laid down certain insurance initiatives, targets and structural and organizational changes that can improve the quality of care received by patients through the NHS. These changes are emphasized along with the need for multi-agency and multi-organizational collaborative working across disciplinary boundaries. The four key interfaces for which collaboration and coordination measures are being suggested are health and kindly care general medical and community health services primary and scrapary care and interface with carers (DoH, 1996).The education of nurses now days are a component part more intense and harder than it was 10 days ago. Over the last 10 years, thither has been a gradual shift for the education and training of nurses. Currently all nurses have to be trained to a degree univer sity level before they can practice as a fully qualified nurse. Opportunities for nurses have increased by large, with one training hazard being through the internet although this method of training has to be approved by the NHS. On the other hand, years ago nurses only had to have a diploma or LPNS. Now days all nurses have to attend and complete continuing education courses to keep up to date with the new trends and schooling used in the current day.In addition to the higher and more advanced education, which nurses now have to have, there comes an increases scope of practice. In the current worlds, nurses are doing more and going places that in the past they would not be allowed to have done. The scope of practice is an expression used for various professions that define the procedures, actions, and processes that are allowed to be used and practiced. In the health care profession, there are many different jobs with very different defined scope of practice laws and regulations. These include nursing, social workers, speech and language pathology, audiologists, training, radiography, nuclear medicine, dentists, surgeons, paramedics, physicians and many more. In the interest of the patients, it is a good thing that nurses are allowed to do more and more as there are more doctors than nurses, so the patients whitethorn be seen quicker, but on the other hand, it is not a good thing as nurses are doing more and maybe sympathize with for the patient need and wished less.Nowadays in hospitals, the wards are not gender mixed although the nurses are gender mixed between wards. The stereotypical roles of a nurse have change a lot since the 1990s. There are more staminate nurses but still not enough. However although there are still not enough male nurses, the female domination of nurses is slowly decreasing and now more men are entering the caring profession. For patients the more male nurses is a good thing because some patients i.e. men prefer to be treated by a man. For example, a man may like to be washed by a man and not a woman for dignity reasons. In addition, for years, the majority of nursing was thought of as a female profession but every year more and more males are joining the nursing profession. Nowadays being a male nurse does not have a stigma attached to it and is now seen as a very good career. The demand of nurses now in 2010 is by large massive. The NHS is always asking for more nurses. When the baby dash started there was a very large need for nurses but as the baby boom is decreasing now there is time and money for improvement of standards of living and disease control, our citizens are living longer. As the general population increases, so too does the demand for nurses. Now more than ever nurses are overworked but with the increasingly shortage of nurses they have to work harder and longer hours, which over again is not benefiting the patients. Because of the nursing demand and staff shortage, staffs are taking more si ck days due to excessive stress and lack of sleep and self-time. This is because nursing is very demanding on a person not just mentally but physically too. This is seriously compromising the NHS.In 2010 compared to 1980, there is a lot more technology for nurses to use and to be trained to use. Nurses today have to keep up to date with a lot more technology than a nurse 50 years would have had to. Technology can be seen as a good gadget and as a bad gadget, because not only do nurses have to provide basic and skilled care, they excessively have to learn how to work with many types of equipment that are specific to their area of expertise. The more popular piece of technology used every day by a nurse is a computer. Nurses use them every day as a way to document the care given to a patient. Although new technology is a good advantage for health care, it has its negatives, for example training the staff to use it costs a lot of money, but on the other hand, it can save lifes. Other important technology that is used every day that benefits a patient is, air mattresses as they help to prevent DVTs and assistance with IV insertion which has made things a lot simpler. All of the new high tech equipment being simplified is for user- friendliness, which means that the new methods are speeding things up. Lastly, infection control plays a big part in the NHS every day, so new technology is being developed all the time, although the basic hand washing procedures remain very much the same. There are many different approaches to nursing care, one being the holistic care. This type of care has become more and more popular. The commutations between the Health and Allied Health services improving, a total Patient Care sit has come about. Resulting in decreased in-patient times and better health outcomes. The holistic care has been seen more popular within the complementary therapies and concepts. The patient load that a nursed has is massive. In America, there was a debate about the amount of patients under care of nurses. In 1999, the debate was won and there was a cap of the amount of patients allowed under care of one nurse. The results have been very effective from happier staff and better care for patients. There should be a cap in the UK. The changes of nursing over the last 10 years have been welcomed with open arms, but there are still teething problems and views that need to be heard. optimal patient care is in a constant battle with budget and we can expect to see new policy reforms, new technology, and new demands created in the decade to come. It remains the responsibility of not only the nurses, but also the patients of the future, to voice their opinions in order to guide the Industry in the right direction.Nurses are now expected to come with a bigger patents load but more paper work as well. The importance of the paper work has increases over the last 10 years. This is due to the society that we now live in as it has been raised to ne ed someone to blame for everything. As a nurse or doctor there are many emotional people around you every day as people are dying all the time. Therefore, sometimes people sue the nurses and doctors as they are upset and think the person died due to the NHSs fault. Following this, nurses and doctors keep finding themselves in court. Even if they have not done anything, all allegations have to be investigated. This is the reason for paperwork there is to write up. Paperwork is the only solid setting stone and proof/ backup of a nurses care. A nurse is required to document every blood pressure reading, every medication, every incident, and every day. They have toaccountfor every action, and put it all in writing. The problem with documentation is that it takes time. More time for documentation means less time for patients. Plain and simple. The polices that nurses have to follow are very homogeneous across the whole world. In Australia, the no-lift policy was introduced in the late 19 90s. To date the policy is still used and the nurses are trained use this policy. No-Lift means using Lifting Machines to mobilise patients, using slide sheets to manoeuvre them around the bed and promoting back care in general. Although this concept is yet to be adopted in the UK, the benefits are becoming obvious and discussions have begun on the implementation of a similar policy in the UK.There are many different types of nurses that work in the community and in the hospitals. These can range from, Adult nurses, mental health nurses, Childrens nurses, Learning disability nurses, District nurses, Neonatal nursing, Health visitors, Practice nurses, Prison nurses, civilize nurses and Healthcare assistants. There are also many different levels to being a nurse. A health care assistant is under a nurse, and then you have staff nurses, then sisters and ward sisters and then nurse manager/ matron. All in all these all make up our NHS and work as a team to provide the best possible ca re for the patient. There is a large scale of pay, which starts at around 13,000 to 67,000. The above table shows how the NHS works. The last 40 years nurses uniform has changed but not that much. In the 1960s nurses still wore dresses and stocking .In the 1970s more changes came to the way nurses dressed. Dresses were a little shorter and the white caps were bloodline to lose importance in some hospitals across the country. In the 1980s there was an end of the nursing caps altogether. Nurses also began wearing disposable aprons at this period of time rather than cloth aprons and medical facilities became much less militant in regards to restrictions on jewellery and cosmetics. During the 1990s and today, nursing dresses have been replaced with much more easy scrub accommodates. Scrub suits can be found in a wide variety of colours and styles. Some hospitals have specific scrub suit colours for different types of hospital staff and others allow nurses and other staff to choose co lours and styles that appeal to them. Todays nursing uniforms are designed more for function than form but are also considered much more comfortable than those worn throughout history are. There are many different theories towards nursing. The three main ones are needs based theories. The main point being that the focus of nursing is the assessment and care of the patients / clients needs, which they are unable to meet for themselves. The second theory is interactions theories. The main point of this being the focus of nursing is the relationship between the nurse and the patient / client. Lastly, the other theory is the goal-based theories. The main point again being that the focus of nursing is the outcome and emphasis is placed on facilitating the ability of the patient / client to adapt to changes in their health and regain stableness and harmony.Today in the NHS nursing takes on a role of the biomedical model. The biomedical model has been around since the mid- nineteenth centu ry as the most cat valium model used to diagnose diseases. The biomedical model states that All illness and symptoms arise from underlying abnormality in the body, all diseases give rise to symptoms and that health is absence of disease. The model overlooks the fact that the diagnosis is a result of commutation between doctor and patient. Biomedical model has no doubt led to wide medical advances although the patient has little responsibility for presence /cause of illness. In conclusion, the changes in roles and responsibilities of nurses in the modernisation of the NHS can beneficial towards the patients but can also be damaging towards the patients. This is due to lack of staff and increased working hours, more paperwork, and more tasks that a nurse has to do and there are mostly more patients now than 10 years ago. Therefore, a nurse has less time caring for the patients needs. On the other hand, the modernisation is seen as a good thing because there is more technology nowada ys to make the nurses life easier, which also get a more persist result. Within the context of policies and procedures there are no many more rules than year ago, which does make a nurses life maybe easier but maybe harder. With all of these changes to nurses and the NHS in general, is the modernization is good thing, does it have the patients interests are heart or is it about saving money?

Synthesising Benzocaine via Reflux with a Condenser

Synthesising ethyl aminobenzoate via Reflux with a CondenserSynthesis and line drawing of benzocaine experiment practical reportAim The experiment was to synthesise benzocaine via reflux with a condenser and was characterised by examining at the infra-red spectrum and chemic shifts of NMR. cosmos Benzocaine belongs to a collection of medication identified as local anaesthetics and generally consumed as a topical pain reliever. Its mechanism of action is to preclude nerve conduction when applied locally in appropriate concentration to nerve tissues. The main benefit of local anaesthetics is that it does not cause unconsciousness to the enduring and its action could be reversible. The use of local anaesthetics presents complete tissue recovery with no permanent damage. The intention of the experiment was to synthesise benzocaine, an ester, from 4-aminobenzoic blistery, a carboxylic demigod, by Fischer Esterification. The mechanism in figure 1 was to combined 4-aminobenzoic acid an d ethanol in a reflux reaction with the addition of sulphuric acid as a catalyst to p poleuce the product.Figure 1Method In week one of the experiment, 4-aminobenzoic acid (3.0g), methylated spirits (20cm3) and concentrated sulphuric acid (3.0ml) was added to a dry round bottom flask (100cm3). A condenser was then placed onto the flask. Next, the mixture was placed on a heating cortex and the reflux reaction was carried out for thirty minutes. Afterwards, the reaction mixture was cooled down to room temperature and the condenser was removed. The mixture was gently stirred with a glass rod while sodium hydroxide solution 20 % (20cm3) was added slowly until the mixture has reached neutral using strips of pH paper. Subsequently, pour the contents into a beaker containing 70cm3 of ice and dust the flask with fresh distilled water into the beaker until the capacity is 150cm3. A Buchner funnel was then used in vacuum filtration to isolate the product. Lastly the product was transferred to a see to it glass and dried in the oven for 15 minutes. In week two the experiment was repeated, conversely, isopropyl alcohol was used instead of methylated spirits.ResultsPercentage homecoming = (Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) x 1001st weeks dowry yieldC7H7NO2= 127 + 7 + 14 + 32= 137g/ jettyC2H5OH= 24 + 5 + 16 + 1= 46 g/molC9H11NO2= 108 + 11 + 14 + 32 = 165g/mol1st step 3g divide 137 g/mol = 0.0219mol limiting reagentsecond step 0.789g/ml of methylated spirit x 20ml (used) = 15.78g3rd step 15.78g divide 46g/mol = 0.343mol4th step 0.0219mol x 165g/mol = 3.6135g supposed potentiometer of benzocaineFirst weeks product chain reactor (benzocaine) 2.28gramsPercentage yield 2.28g/3.6135g= 0.63 x 100 = 63%2nd weeks voice yieldC7H7NO2= 127 + 7 + 14 + 32 = 137g/molC2H5OH= 24 + 5 + 16 + 1= 46g/molC10H13NO2= 179g/mol1st step 3g divide 137g/mol= 0.0219mol limiting reagent2nd step 0.786g/ml of Isopropyl alcohol x 20ml (used) = 15.72g3rd step 15.72g divide 46g/mol = 0.342mol4th s tep 0.0219mol x 179g/mol = 3.92g theoretical mass of Isopropyl 4-aminobenzoateSecond weeks product mass (Isopropyl 4-aminobenzoate) 0.29gramsPercentage yield 0.29g/3.92g= 7.4%Ethyl 4-aminobenzoate (benzocaine) first weeks productExperiment warming point 92-96 degrees CelsiusReference melting point 80-90 degrees CelsiusIsopropyl 4-aminobenzoate second weeks productExperiment melting point 83-85 degrees CelsiusReference melting point 84 degrees Celsius13Carbon-NMR4-aminobenzoic acidBenzocaineH-NMR4-aminobenzoic acidBenzocaineInfrared Analysis(Benzocaine) Week 1 product(Isopropyl 4-aminobenzoate) Week 2 productDEPT-135 NMR4-aminobenzoic acidBenzocaineDiscussion of resultsIn the experiment, the final appearance of both products appears to be crystalline like powders after drying them in the oven. Conversely, the second product (isopropyl 4-am inobenzoic acid) melting point was 83-85 degrees Celsius and compare to the theoretical value, it was within the range. Due to the fact that the first product has a higher(prenominal)(prenominal) melting point, it is considered that sample was heated as well fast using the heating apparatus or the period the product was in the oven may have been too short thereforeexcess water are trapped in the product causing extra hydrogen bonding in the molecule, hence higher energy was needed to break the bonds. Melting point accuracy depicts purity of the product therefore the shorter the range of melting point implies a productive synthesis.Furthermore, the mass was obtained as the actual yield from benzocaine and isopropyl 4-aminobenzoate to calculate the percentage yield. The theoretical yield of benzocaine was 3.6135grams and the mass obtained in the experiment was 2.28grams, giving a percentage yield of 63 %. This is a high percentage yield, representing a productive synthesis. Conversely , in the second experiment the theoretical yield was 3.92 grams and the mass obtained in the experiment was 0.29grams, giving a percentage yield of 7.4 %. This is a relatively low yield, representing a poor synthesis. This failure synthesis may have been cod to several(prenominal) errors including inaccurate instrumental handling techniques, loss of product due to several transferences, inaccurate measurement of resources, and not scraping the entire product out of the Buchner funnel.(4-aminobenzoic acid) (Benzocaine)In H-NMR, 4-aminobenzoic acid and benzocaine was identified. By looking at 4-aminobenzoic acid, there were 5 unambiguous peaks representing 5 distinct proton atmospheres available in the molecule. However the coordinate of benzocaine, the H-NMR identifies 6 distinct peaks representing 6 distinct proton atmospheres. By observing the peaks in the both molecules, similar singlet peaks were found. The singlet peak for 4-aminobenzoic acid was 5.7747ppm and benzocaine was 4.0609ppm.Both singlet groups were considered aminoalkane groups since the 2 hydrogen connected to the nitrogen (pink) creates the same environment therefore only 1 peak was found. In both molecules, the amine group is considered as an electron donating group since it shields the hydrogen on the adjacent carbons (blue) in the aromatic ring. This shielding causes the hydrogen on the adjacent carbons (blue) to have a lower chemical shift in the spectrum than the hydrogen on the other carbons (red) in the aromatic ring. Furthermore, the hydrogen on the other carbons (red) has a higher chemical shift due to the close distance with the carbonyl group. The carbonyl group is electronegative therefore shifting them at a lower magnetic field. There is a distinct peak appeared in 4-aminobenzoic acid spectrum, showing a chemical shift of 12 ppm which is considered to be part of the hydrogen of the COOH (light blue). As benzocaine has a long-acting chain compared to 4-aminobenzoic acid, further observation was needed. In benzocaine a peak was found at close to 4.2907ppm-4.3441ppm and has a splitting pattern of four. A quartet shows that it had 3 adjacent hydrogen atoms therefore it is related to CH2 (green). Furthermore, another peak was found at about 1.3447ppm-1.3804ppm and has a splitting pattern of ternion. A triplet shows that it had 2 adjacent hydrogen atoms therefore it is related to CH3. Since the carbon of CH2 is closer to the oxygen comparing to CH3 therefore it is more de-shielded causing it to be found at a lower magnetic field. Lastly, there were distinct peaks seen in the spectrum for solvent in benzocaine and 4-aminobenzoic acid. In 4-aminobenzoic acid H-NMR, a peak was found at about 2.4630ppm-2.4676ppm and was found to be the solvent DMSO. In benzocaine, a singlet peak was found at 7.2626pm and was found to be the solvent chloroform. In 13Carbon-NMR, the 4-aminobenzoic acid spectrum has 5 peaks representing 5 distinct carbon atmospheres and benzocaine ha s 7 peaks representing 7 distinct carbon atmospheres. The peaks are at about 165ppm-168ppm for both molecules represents the happening of the carbonyl group (C=O). Furthermore, the solvents were seen on both spectrums. One of 4-aminobenzoic acids peaks was at 40.1326ppm which represents DMSO, and benzocaines peak was at 77.1052 which represent Chloroform. In the DEPT-135 NMR (Distortionless sweetening by Polarisation Transfer), it only exemplifies the occurrence between three kinds of carbon groups, (-CH), (-CH2) and (-CH3). (-CH) and (-CH3) carbons are identified through the positive peaks whereas (-CH2) is identified through the negative peaks on the spectrum. By looking at the 4-aminobenzoic acid spectrum, there are two positive peaks representing those are either (-CH) or (-CH3) carbon groups. In the benzocaine spectrum, the occurrence of (-CH) and (-CH3) carbon groups was identified via the positive peaks. However a negative peak was also identified representing a (-CH2) carbo n group has occurred in the spectrum. The Infrared spectrum analysis is useful for analysing the occurrence of different functional groups of the chemical structures such as benzocaine and isopropyl 4-aminobenzoate. By analysing both products, absorption peaks at about 3361cm-1-3457cm-1 on the spectrum were seen at both products. It was considered that the occurrence of the amine group (N-H) was located at the region. Furthermore looking at the structures of both products, the amine group was connected to carbon with the peaks at about 1308.72cm-1-1365.61cm-1 of the spectrum, which represents a C-N bond found in aromatic amine groups. Additionally, looking at the absorption peaks at about 1441.17cm-1-1441.98cm-1 between the two products, it is considered as the aromatic ring (benzene).Moving through the benzene ring, the spectrum shows the occurrence of the carbonyl group (C=O) that is part of ester group in both products. The absorption peaks measured was about 2824.37cm-1-2983.54c m-1. The carbonyl group of two products were also connected with a C-O bond which is part of the ester group. The peaks measured were 1167.10cm-1-1168.85cm-1 in both products.ConclusionThis experiment was considered failure in terms of the weight of the products. It is time-dependent to obtain more accurate yields and handling techniques. Although the melting points were not varied critically, the first product (benzocaine) was not able to achieve a pure product due to high melting point. Although this experiment was considered failure, we still achieved to synthesize 4-aminobenzoic acid to benzocaine and its derivative (isopropyl 4-aminobenzoic acid). Why do you think the pH of 8 cannot be exceeded in this experiment? In the experiment, the reactants carboxylic acid (4-aminobenzoic acid) and ethanol were used to synthesize esters (benzocaine, isopropyl 4-aminobenzoic acid) and water molecules as leaving group. The Fischer Esterification reaction chiefly functions at pH less than 8. However, increasing the alkalinity atmosphere in this experiment implies the occurrence of additional OH (hydroxide ions) in the reaction. The additional hydroxide ions could cause the reaction to reverse, fashioning the reactants to be more favourable and fewer products will be form. As mentioned, Fischer Esterification usually functions at pH less than 8. However, increasing the alkalinity environment would cause the reaction saponification to dominate since the reaction is reversed. How do you expect the Rf value if you have been asked to the synthesize the butyl and pentyl derivatives?By synthesizing the butyl and pentyl derivatives the Rf value would differ since the polarity with the molecular structure is different. I assumed that the butyl and pentyl derivatives that were made could cause Rf value decreases as the alkyl chain increases. As the chain increases the polarity drops therefore the Rf value decreases.ReferenceR. Milnard.
